She walked us through what Citizens Impeachment has built over its first year: 600 constituents showing up simultaneously in every congressional district’s inbox, articles of impeachment that made it to the House floor in three weeks, and a Democratic leadership that promptly bullied the whole thing back into committee — where five impeachment resolutions are now sitting, untouched.

She was clear about what that means: Congress can act. They are choosing not to.

The path forward is Courage for Democracy — 130 pro-impeachment candidates running in over 110 districts across 37 states. There is probably someone running in your district right now.

This is the work. This is one of the people doing it.

Maritza's pick for the week's most fucked-up story: Trump's True Social post after Robert Mueller's death — "Good, I'm glad he's dead" — a statement Senator Tester called far beneath the office, and everyone agreed has become somehow both shocking and utterly unsurprising.

The conversation widened from there into ICE detaining a U.S. citizen for two and a half days with no explanation, nurses in Arizona forming a human chain to protect women in active labor from arrest, and what it means to raise kids — or send a daughter to college far from home — in a country that increasingly feels at war with itself.

Kerala brought a recently updated essay about the loss of control that hits when your kids’ social lives start eclipsing your carefully curated world, called What No One Tells You About Parenting an Adolescent.

We covered a lot of ground: the compliance-rewarded childhoods we inherited and the daughters we’re trying to raise differently; the loneliness of parenting adolescents, especially solo; and Kerala’s counterintuitive take that she feels more solution-oriented now than when she started writing — less grappling, more acting. Her definition of success for her kids: find your community, be kind, be empathetic. No pressure on career, marriage, or children.

The hour closed on something heavier — Kerala navigating what it means to be a white mom raising a biracial Black daughter who’s already being read as far older than 14, code-switching with her relay team, and fielding flak from peers about her friend group. A lot to hold.

We started where we had to: Nabil was at the OK Hotel the night Nirvana played “Smells Like Teen Spirit” for the first time. He was 19, had only ended up there because he’d been turned away from a Cameron Crowe casting call for Singles. He knew something had happened. He just didn’t know yet what.

From there, the conversation wound through the Seattle scene we both lived — the Crocodile, Sonic Boom, the Three Imaginary Girls-era bands — and out to the bigger stages: Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour as a Broadway production that the audience had memorized, arena rock roots neither of us is ashamed of, the Bryan Adams/Survivor show that was, weirdly, very loud and very good.

His pick for most GenX song of all time? “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” of course.
