Mike, founder of Endless Urgency and a longtime digital fundraising force for major Democratic candidates, came in hot with a résumé that somehow gets more impressive the more Fox News arguing it contains.

I set the tone immediately by borrowing Mike’s signature “Good fucking morning to everyone except…” and directing it squarely at Republican Senator Tim Scott—after Trump shared an AI video depicting Barack and Michelle Obama as apes and Scott’s strongest response was, “hoping it was fake.”

Of course the video was fake.
Of course the President actually shared it.

And of course there will be no consequences. We talked about how Republicans will almost certainly claim they “never saw it,” as if that absolves them of anything.

Mike’s take was blunt: the media should stop politely looking away. Put the image in front of every lawmaker pretending ignorance and make them answer for it. No ducking. No deflecting.

From there, the conversation spiraled into billionaires, Bezos hollowing out The Washington Post, and the grim reality that a man can rent Venice for a wedding but somehow can’t keep journalists employed.

Mike argued that the issue isn’t capitalism vs. socialism so much as the total collapse of any sense of public obligation among the ultra-rich. I noted that the only billionaires doing anything remotely decent seem to be women—MacKenzie Scott, specifically.

The throughline of the episode was deflection and instability: Trump’s slipping popularity, the Epstein fallout, and the increasingly frantic effort to rig the rules instead of winning voters. That energy carried straight into the Fucked-Up Friday competition.

Mike went first, sounding the alarm on election interference—seized ballots, Tulsi Gabbard lurking in the background, cryptic whistleblower letters, and the creeping sense that something far worse than rhetoric is being normalized.

I followed with the SAVE Act—a voter suppression measure that would disproportionately purge married women and anyone whose legal name doesn’t match their birth certificate. The point is simple: this isn’t about “integrity.” It’s about erasing votes at scale.

Lawrence closed with a chilling reminder that the last nuclear arms control treaty is effectively collapsing, leaving the world without inspections or limits—just guesswork and fear.

was still there in the chat — an odd little role reversal — but this was my Thursday, a space we carved out for women’s lives, women’s rights, and the uncomfortable reality that so many things Gen X grew up assuming were permanent… simply aren’t.

I opened the show with the personal context behind Fine Feminists: coming of age with Roe v. Wade, no-fault divorce, financial independence, and the basic ability to build a life on your own terms.

It’s hard to believe how easily those freedoms once felt like givens, and how surreal it is to watch them erode in real time, not just legally but culturally, through the way feminism itself is being reframed as something suspect or even harmful.

joined me first, wearing RBG earrings from a fellow Substack artist , and immediately grounded the conversation in what she does best: auditing the narrative one story at a time.

Melissa and I discussed our new Blue Amp piece on the SAVE Act, a bill already passed by the House that claims to be about “election security” but, in practice, could create massive new barriers for voters whose names don’t match their birth certificates — which is to say, most married women, many divorced women, widows, trans people, and anyone who has changed their name for safety or survival.

Melissa broke down the paperwork trap with chilling clarity: certified documents for every link in the chain, with voter roll purges as the looming weapon.

That’s a sentence I never expected to write.

But even before we even touched the headlines, we found ourselves in that familiar Fucked-up Friday space where the personal and the political blur together.

Lawrence and I talked candidly about something that’s been sitting heavy with me: how constant crisis slowly crowds out creativity. We talked about how writing, art, and even imagining the future keep getting postponed because the world keeps lighting itself on fire again. It’s hard to plan when you’re always bracing.

That led us into a science fiction trope we both hate — the moment when humanity is on the brink of real progress and instead chooses chaos — and the uncomfortable feeling that we’re living inside that plotline right now.

We kept coming back to the same truth: paying attention has become a full-time job, and opting out doesn’t actually set you free.

Then we were joined by our guest, the amazing , who brought the kind of grounded clarity that cuts through panic without pretending it isn’t justified. She introduced herself as an “average informed citizen,” which felt both accurate and refreshing, and talked about her work uncovering environmental injustice in Superfund communities. From there, she shared how that work unexpectedly led her into deep research on Epstein — including the discovery of a genuinely disturbing sci-fi novel written by Bill Barr’s father that eerily mirrored real-world abuse and blackmail.

What stood out most wasn’t just what she’s uncovered, but how intentionally she communicates it. Knowledge, she reminded us, is a privilege, and people shut down when they feel stupid or overwhelmed. Her approach is the opposite of that.

From there, we turned to Don Lemon’s arrest, the use of the FACE Act, and the chilling implications for journalists and protesters alike. Kate broke down how laws are being bent away from their original purpose and repurposed as tools of intimidation.

We also talked about pattern recognition, propaganda, and why so many of us feel like we’re shouting into the void while watching history loop. And we named something that doesn’t get said often enough: access to news itself is becoming gated by money, algorithms, and fear.

Fucked-up Friday pulled all of it into focus.

Lawrence fought through it while feeling like he’d been hit by a truck. I jumped in mid-travel exhaustion, and somehow, because this community always does, we landed on our feet.

It was goofy and cathartic, but honestly it was the most honest way to start a Fucked-up Friday after the week we’ve had.

Once we got our footing, we brought in our guest, journalist , who was already backstage laughing along.

Ahmed’s voice matters right now because he’s been documenting authoritarianism in real time for years, including sounding the alarm early on Project 2025. Also because he’s deeply grounded in history while being very clear-eyed about the present.

Ahmed joined us from Brooklyn and immediately helped broaden the lens, talking about New York’s political climate under Mayor Zohran Mamdani and what it looks like when genuinely progressive leadership shifts.

He talked about what’s possible, even moving more cautious figures into action. Universal childcare coming together quickly wasn’t just policy to him; it was proof that persuasion plus conviction can actually work.

From there, the conversation turned darker and more honest. We talked about Minneapolis, about the killing of Reneé Good, and about the immediate lies told afterward. Ahmed didn’t hedge. He described feeling morally furious, and then resolute, arguing that journalists should treat every statement from this administration as false until proven otherwise.

Ahmed drew a sharp line between Gestapo analogies and something even closer to American history, pointing out that what we’re seeing also echoes slave catching and Jim Crow authoritarianism. That framing landed hard.

When we shifted into Fucked-up Friday, the stories reflected that escalation. I shared my fear response to reports that the Trump administration demanded a list of Jewish faculty from the University of Pennsylvania.

Lawrence followed with reporting out of Minneapolis, suggesting the use of hexachloroethane, a toxic chemical banned in international warfare, against civilians, including children, and noted how links describing it seemed to disappear overnight.

Ahmed closed with an NBC News report detailing how ICE used AI to fast-track recruits without proper training, raising chilling questions about who is being sent into communities and why. The audience voted, and Lawrence’s story took the crown, though “winning” felt like the wrong word.

and I were both already spun up by what we’d seen overnight — Minneapolis all over the headlines, another ICE shooting, the sense that something has shifted from “alarming” to unmistakably dangerous. Before we could spiral too far on our own, though, we brought in the reason so many of you had been tagging us nonstop: .

Jen is a former senior patrol agent with the U.S. Border Patrol and the author of Against the Wall. She’s been having a very deserved moment on Substack for telling the truth about what these agencies are and how they actually operate.

Jenn introduced herself plainly and powerfully, walking us through her path from a liberal upbringing in Alabama, to joining Border Patrol in the mid-90s, to eventually resigning because of corruption, violence, and what she described as a culture that rewards brutality and covers up crime. Her story included trauma, personal and institutional, but what stood out was her clarity about how deliberate all of this is.

When we asked what’s changed recently, why things feel more extreme, she pointed to new funding, accelerated hiring, and policy memos that effectively green-light violence.

The hardest part of the hour was also the most grounding: Jen was honest that there’s no magic de-escalation strategy, that fear and chaos are the point, and that community organizing and mutual aid matter more now than spectacle.

Somehow, we closed by laughing about Dead Milkmen songs and “Bitchin’ Camaro,” because that’s what Gen X does. We stare straight at the horror and still find a way to remember who we are.

He joined us for our weekly Fucked-up Friday competition, but first we had to joke about the fact that we had two Jews and a Muslim walk into a bar our post-Christmas episode. What could’ve sounded like the opening to a bad joke instead led to an interesting and genuinely informative discussion, with Qasim explaining how Islam’s diverse and relatively recent US origins mean it doesn’t have the same singular cultural traditions that developed around holidays in older, more geographically concentrated religions—like how Jewish people get Chinese food on Christmas.

It was one of those moments where humor gave way to learning, and the tone for the episode was set.

From there, we moved into the stories of the week and our final Fucked-up Friday competition of the year.

• Lawrence went first, raising concerns about the “completely out of control” bird flu that could lead to global pandemic in 2026, and how little structural preparedness exists despite everything we’ve already lived through. His point wasn’t alarmist — it was about how quickly institutional memory fades, and how vulnerable we remain when public health is treated as optional.

• Qasim framed his story around Trump’s global militarization and war posture, starting with a bombing in Nigeria and widening the lens from there. His point wasn’t just about that single event, but about how U.S. foreign policy, military alliances, and arms sales quietly shape violence far beyond our borders — often without sustained attention from American media or political leaders. What made his point land was the way he connected the dots between rhetoric, policy, and real-world consequences, especially in regions that rarely receive sustained coverage unless American interests are directly involved.

• Dana wrapped things up with a story about the return of student loan wage garnishment beginning in early January, at a moment when many people are already financially stretched to the limit and facing skyrocketing health insurance premiums. We talked about how punitive and poorly timed the policy is, and how disconnected it feels from the economic reality most borrowers are living in.

In the end, the audience couldn’t pick a winner: it was a three-way tie.

It felt fitting for a week that touched on public health, systemic injustice, and economic pressure all at once, and for a year where we’ve been flooded with fucked-up news. How can we pick one story as the worst when it’s all such an outrage?
