A 17,000 SQUARE FOOT ESTATE, LEAWOOD, KANSAS (The Daily Whatever Press) — ICYMI, Shane Gillis took the Saturday Night Live stage on October 10. It was his third time hosting the show that fired him in 2019. He used the most coveted monologue slot in American comedy to announce that he hadn’t been to the gym in a while and didn’t realize women dress like whores now.
That was the whole bit. There was no turn, no twist, and no punchline waiting in the wings. A grown man looked at women’s workout shorts, compared them to neon fishing lures, and reached for a slur on live network television while Studio 8H groaned. He had Lorne Michaels, a live national audience, and a guaranteed viral clip, and he spent all of it on material you could have found scrawled on a 1987 Gold’s Gym locker-room wall.
Lazy as fuck, Shane. But that’s not the interesting part of this story to me.
Then SNL posted the monologue to Instagram, and among the 130,000-ish likes, fans spotted one from Travis Kelce.
That got my attention.
About that like…
I’m not talking about 2010 Travis, the giant misogynistic doofball whose old tweets read like a frat-house whiteboard. People grow, and I credit him for growing. This is 2026 Travis: 37 years old, a married man with a publicist, a podcast empire, and a feminist superstar of a wife whose fanbase is overwhelmingly women and girls.
His camp told Page Six he’s always been a massive fan of the show and was “supporting a friend.” Now consider the friend part. In June, Gillis made a surprise appearance at Tight End University, the summit Travis cohosts in Nashville, and he stuck around for the celebrations after Taylor performed. So Shane got to be in the room for Taylor’s set, and four months later Travis tapped a little heart on Shane calling women in shorts whores.
Meanwhile, Dan Levy posted a video saying more men need to stand up and defend women. Dan Levy has never caught a pass in his life, and he understood the assignment. Taylor’s husband hit like.
A like seems small, since it’s just a thumb. But when you’re the most-watched husband on the planet, a like is a billboard on I-70 that says I THINK THIS IS FUNNY, and it’s aimed straight at your wife’s audience.
As one member of that multi-zillion member community: I’m not impressed.
The woman on the treadmill
To train for her 3.5-hour Eras show, Taylor ran on a treadmill every day while singing the entire setlist, out loud. I’d imagine she did it in workout clothes. Perhaps some days, those clothes were — wait for it — shorts.
Now if I were Taylor, sitting on that couch in Kansas next to my husband, Travis Kelce, here’s what I might be asking him: Babe, do you have something to say about what I wear when I work out? Do you understand who that joke is about? Did you actually want the internet to watch you co-sign Shane fucking Gillis in 2026 for a non-joke he told on the biggest platform available for comedians, in the wake of the Cornell 7 assaults? And most importantly — did you think for one second about the PR goddamn mess you just handed me?
Because Taylor has to clean this up or decide not to, and either way it’s her problem now. Which brings me to what actually worries me…
Where the fuck is Taylor?
Taylor and Travis married July 3 at Madison Square Garden. In September she released The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, which bolted four new songs onto an album that already felt pretty milquetoast. They are “Patient Zero,” “Pink Clouding,” “Babylon,” and — I could not make this up — “Cleveland!” That’s Travis’ hometown. The songs are… fine. But they’re just so uninteresting. If another artist released them, sure, maybe. But they come nowhere near the bar Taylor set with her previous releases.
This summer, the White House and Trump campaign accounts were using her songs on TikTok, and the music simply disappeared from those posts. There was no statement and no clapback. Which, fair. Sometimes saying nothing is the better approach when you’re the biggest star on earth.
But this is the woman who signed her 2024 Harris Presidential endorsement “Childless Cat Lady,” throwing direct shade on then VP-candidate/alleged sofa humper J.D. Vance. Her single 2018 Instagram post sent voter registrations up by roughly 65,000. When a radio DJ who groped her sued her, she counter-sued for $1 just to make the point — and she fucking won. Because of course she did. Taylor is a warrior.
Or she was. The midterms are three weeks out, and the loudest thing we’ve heard from her is four lackluster songs, and silence.
Look, babe
I’m a memoirist. I know All Too Well how writing to the bone is gutting. My last personal essay cost me one relationship and nearly a second, and I’ve been happily writing news stories ever since because I don’t want the spotlight on my personal life right now. I get it. It’s fucking hard.
So maybe — and this is pure conjecture — maybe you don’t want the focus on the reality of you and Travis right now, either. Maybe that’s why the new songs feel written at arm’s length, in the third person, missing the narrative edge you built a career on. “Patient Zero” doesn’t sound like a woman managing, well, anything. It seems like you asked Claude to write pop song lyrics about a woman who’s managing conflict and cut and paste them in, devils and halos and all.
I understand the impulse. I’m just worried you’re not okay in there.
It’s not for me to tell someone else what to do, Taylor. But if you’re trapped — blink twice and we’ll send in the Swifties. I’m raising two daughters, and they belong to a generation of girls who learned to say their piece because you said yours. I don’t know what’s happening in that house, and nobody does. But your silence leaves us two readings — complicit or silenced — and we don’t love either one for you.
If he isn’t showing up the way he needs to, you can get out from under this. We don’t want to hear that you married some douche noodle who’s calling the shots. Though damn, I bet your follow-up record to that breakup would be spectacular. But no, we don’t need that from you. We want you to be happy and fulfilled. And can Mr “just doing a favor for a friend” Kelce meet that bar?? You’re Taylor fucking Swift.
We’re worried about you, babe.
Aside to Travis? It’s not too late to click and unlike it.
